Kaumatua
Kaumatua is a term for the “elders” of any organisation that operates within Maoridom. At Waitangi, kaumatua guide and advise the Board, managers and staff. A kaumatua is not part of the formal administration structure, but represents an element of spiritual strength and guardianship.
Kaumatua Wiremu Wiremu is acknowledeged at Waitangi Treaty Grounds for his contribution especially in forming and drilling the “waka crew” - more than 120 people responsible for launching and navigating Aotearoa/New Zealand's largest ceremonial canoe.
