Cancer fund-raiser inducted into kapa haka

Posted 3 April 2008

Nga Puawai o Waitangi member, Dawn Mason, is pictured giving an instant course in kapa haka to Flemish visitor Wim Beijnsberger at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds on Thursday.

The traveling teacher was challenged by his colleagues in Belgium to undertake various missions around the world to raise money for child cancer. When he arrived at Waitangi Treaty Grounds, the resident culture group and staff were quick to induct him, in the name of a good cause. The performance was “willing” says Communications Advisor

Michael Hooper, “and the audience of tourists were very kind. Given the experience of the Treaty Grounds group who rehearse and perform several times a day, Wim did reasonably well. He even managed to look quite fierce. In an effort to increase the charity payout by his colleagues, we’ve put a picture or two up on our website to motivate them!”

So, Belgian readers, how much has Wim motivated you to contribute? Email me - michael hooper
