CEO Jeanette Richardson welcomes PM Rt Hon John Key
Prime Minister forges historical linkPrime Minister John Key expressed excitement and approval, on touring the latest developments at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. In the company of CEO Jeanette Richardson and Waitangi National Trust Board Chair Jeremy Williams, the Prime Minister has inspected progress on nearly $6 million worth of improvements and restoration, scheduled for completion before the busy summer tourism season. The work has been funded by the Trust, 90 percent from its own reserves.
“There’s a lot of development work going on, and there’s no doubt that anyone coming anywhere near the Far North is going to want to visit the Treaty Grounds to get a sense of New Zealand’s cultural history,” commented the Prime Minister. “The investment that is going on here is world-class, and they (the Trust) should be commended for what they are doing.”
Jeanette Richardson says “the visit was a great boost to everyone who works at, and contributes to the Treaty Grounds and it was a delight to show the Prime Minister what is happening in preparation for this summer.”
During his informal visit, Mr Key joked with workers perched on the roof of the Treaty House replacing wooden shingles, and he also talked with bricklayers on the site of new utilities and welcome centre buildings. “It’s very exciting to see the development work, building what is a very historical part of New Zealand into a world-class tourism attraction,” said Mr Key.
