Police VisitPosted September 2009
Kaumatua Wiremu Wiremu, Ngatokimatawhaorua and Commissioner Broad
Top policeman at WaitangiThe country’s top policeman has pronounced himself impressed with Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Commissioner Howard Broad visited the estate to familiarise himself with operations, recent developments and improvements to visitor facilities. Following a lively powhiri, he spent much of the day at the Treaty Grounds, mostly in the company of managers, kaumatua and chief executive Jeanette Richardson.
Commissioner Broad took a tour with Jeanette Richardson and with kaumatua Wiremu Wiremu, showing a special interest in the refurbishment operations to the iconic Waitangi-based waka Ngatokimatawhaorua which was in separate sections while new lashings were being prepared. He also walked the beach where Governor Hobson came ashore. "It was great to visit the Treaty Grounds at the invitation of the Waitangi National Trust,” commented the Commissioner. “This historical birth place of the nation is of immense interest to New Zealanders and overseas visitors alike.”
